Archaeology
by Rebecca Stark. Educational Impressions. This is part of the"-ologies" series and is available as a Teacher edition or a student edition. Both provide background information to provide a general understanding of the subject. The activities are based on both given information and outside research and encourage critical thinking skills, which are keyed to Bloom's taxonomy.
Teacher editions contain all the student book pages and also pre-and post-tests, quizzes, puzzles, a glossary, answers, and bibliography.
Student and teacher editions contain reproducible student activity pages. These pages introduce the subject and instruct the students in basic archaeology techniques -- excavation, digging out a site, using basic tools, etc. Then there is background information on The Ages of Human Existence, and chronology and methods of dating artifacts. This is followed by information on most of the early cultures and what archaeologists have learned about them: Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Ancient China; Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Minoans, Stonehenge, Earliest Americans (Anasazi, Maya, Aztec, Inca). Lastly, there is a discussion on accidental finds, and underwater archaeology.
For grades 5-12.
Teacher Edition, 96 pages, BTH-654, $13.46-D
Student Edition, 64 pages, BTH-653, $10.79-D
Hands-On Archaeology: Explore the Mysteries of History Through Science by John R. White. Prufrock Press, ©1998. For teachers of students in grades 3-12. This book shows teachers how conduct real-life archaeological digs, as well as simulated ones in the classroom. It is full of fun and creative ideas, helpful lesson plans and forms, and post dig suggestions. Topics covered include Taking Care of Essentials (tools, choosing a site, assessment, etc); Discussing Expectations; The Working Hypotheses (includes scientific methodology); Pre-Excavation Research; Laying Out the Site; Excavation; Maintaining Field Records; Getting the Big Picture; Keeping a Photo Record; Cleaning, Labeling, and Cataloging the System; Maintain a Repository; Produce a Site Report; Create a Museum Display; Taking the Show on the Road. Following most topics is an added chapter full of suggested activities and sample forms.
It would appear that this book is just for teachers, and it takes written permission from the publisher to reproduce any of it. On the other hand, permission to use forms is implied on p. 20 in this sentence: "The forms included herein are but a suggested sampling of the total available. Use them as they stand or modify them to fit your needs. All of them are easily duplicated on most word processing programs...... Appendix B is a series of useful and time-tested forms that can be photocopied, modified, or both. " 200 pages. Pruf-34507. $22.46-D

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday -
Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.
You can fax your purchase orders to 805-237-8639, but it's good to follow up with a phone call in a couple of days to make sure we got it, if you did not receive a delivery confirmation email. Please include an email address with your purchase order in case we have questions and so we can send your delivery confirmation number to you. You can also attach a signed purchase order to an email.
We prefer you ask your questions about products
and availability by
e-mail (barbsbooks@sbcglobal.net), since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and
keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in
your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer
unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or
"Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam
messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee
your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
We receive a small commission from some links to third party sites with whom we have an affiliate relationship.
