CaMis2913.jpg (17300 bytes)  Best Book Ever about California Missions by Randy Womack, a Golden Education Center reproducible lesson book. This is a comprehensive lesson resource that has it all for those in grades 4-8 and their teachers. The first section of the book is full of background information on the missions and includes maps, questions, and research activities. This background information is very important to study before students begin looking at the section on the individual missions, which follows. Although the individual mission sections can be studied in any order, the author suggests using them in order for two reasons: First, the "New Words to Learn" for each section are in order of appearance, and second, the historical stories of the missions sometimes overlap or have references to preceding sections.

Each individual mission section contains a map of the mission chain with a space to write in the names of all missions with the space filled in for the current mission. This is followed by new words to learn (look up in dictionary). Then there is a diagram of the mission compound for the students to label. These pages are followed by a fact sheet on the mission and a short history of the founding of the mission. Whenever space allows, there is a crossword, word search or other puzzle relating to the information that has been presented. Then there is "The Mission Today" page followed by a page  with review questions and bonus activities. for students to complete. There is also a black and white photo of each mission included. In all there are 220 pages, including extra bonus activities -- overall reviews, current addresses, founding dates and information charts for both Californias, time line, craft ideas, and more -- answer keys, Resource List, and Glossary. Cat. #GEC-2913. All this for only $15.26-D

There is also a laminated California Missions poster published by Golden Education Company that has color pictures of all the missions and a map to show where each mission and California Indian Tribal Region was located. The Iron Dragon Never Sleeps by Stephen Krensky. Dell, 1995. Reading level 4.5. Ten-year-old Winnie moves to Cisco, California, with her family in the summer of 1867 when her father, a mining engineer for the Central Pacific Railroad, needs to relocate from Sacramento to help build the transcontinental railroad. Cisco is small, and there seem to be no other children at first. Most people were either miners or railroad workers, and many of these were Chinese immigrant laborers who were brought into the country just to build the railroad. The only friend Winnie makes is one of these -- a young Chinese tea carrier. The stories he tells are very different from the ones her father tells about the work. Sometimes Winnie doesn't know what to think. She has already seen plenty of prejudice against the Chinese in town. Later in the summer when the Chinese workers start to complain about their awful working conditions, Winnie needs to decide which side she's on. 90 pages. BTH-2626. $$4.49-D

Rosie and the Bear Flag: Stories of California's Flags from the End of Spanish Rule to the Beginning of the United States and the Story of the Bear Flag Republic as seen through the eyes of young Rosalía Leese, who was there, by Harry Knill. Illustrated with wonderful B/W drawings (which can be colored) by Nick Taylor and Donna Neary. These illustrations are bound to catch the interest of children above primary level. There are a few pictures of some rowdiness in the troops inspired, perhaps by   the alcoholic beverages in evidence. Nevertheless, this did pass my husband's censorship, and he's pretty fussy. 64 pages of intriguing California history for all ages above primary. $3.59-D

Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
