BILINGUAL INSTRUCTION AND
ENGLISH AS A SECOND OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Adult Instruction
Beginning
Reading Activities, Grades 1-3, English and Spanish. This book with
parallel activities in English and Spanish is perfect for traditional bilingual
classrooms, two-way immersion programs, programs offering primary/native
language instruction, EDL and ESL programs. Early readers will benefit from the
gradual progression in activity formats that helps them build confidence and
independence.
Following Directions uses simple instructions
and visual clues to guide children in completing simple high-interest art
projects. Sequencing Directions helps children develop critical thinking
as they order pictures and text that outlines steps for simple, familiar tasks.
Draw...Then Write provides simple directions for creating a picture and
then guides children in writing about it. Read, Think, Cut and Paste
reinforces critical thinking and reading skills as children use visual and
context clues and sequence story events. In All About Me, children
practice early literacy skills as they participate in activities designed to
help them develop self-esteem. Lastly, Who? What? Where? When? helps
children reinforce writing and critical thinking skills as they focus on nouns,
verbs, and prepositions in an age appropriate approach. 304 pages in all.

Bienvenidos:
A monthly bilingual / bicultural teacher's resource guide to Mexico and Hispanic
Culture by Cynthia Downs and Terry Becker. Instructional Fair, 2005.
This book is aptly titled "Welcome," for it welcomes students in grades 1-6 to
the study of the traditions and customs of Mexico and the Hispanic culture. This
book helps a teacher incorporate this culture into the daily classroom routine.
It is organized by the month with topics that correspond to other parts of your
monthly curriculum. As you travel through the year your students will be exposed
to Mexican language, culture, history, folklore, music, art, holidays, special
celebrations, and famous Mexican people. Both English and Spanish speakers will
be exposed to the language of the other, though this is probably aimed more at
those learning Spanish than those learning English. 305 pages. Reproducible
student pages for one classroom. BTH-3961. $19.76-D

Bilingual Reading
Comprehension Featuring English and Spanish Paired Readings by Susan
Luton: A Steck-Vaughn series, new in 2007 and now available. Books in this
series are designed for students who read English or Spanish or both. They
contain paired readings -- fiction paired with non-fiction -- on various themes.
These appear to use the text of the Pair-it Books and
add comprehension exercises that are grade-level appropriate. Each book for
grades 1 and 2 has 11
themes which gives you 22 stories in English and Spanish with a variety of
comprehension activities in English and Spanish. These are a wonderful
complement to the Pair-it Books, since they are
reproducible for classroom use and have the text of 44 different books -- 22
English and 22 Spanish. But these have the entire text of a book on one page
with black and white illustrations, so they don't replace the Pair-it Books.
These are currently available for grades 1-4. Books for grades 3 and 4 do not
appear to draw on the Pair-it Books for content, but do keep the concept and
have one fiction and one nonfiction story for each topic. Actually, the Pair-it
Books don't have Spanish translations at the higher levels yet. They have six
topical units each -- twelve stories.

ESL:
Building English Proficiency. A Steck-Vaughn. These three reproducible
books address the specific problems experienced by students whose first language
is not English, but native speakers can also use these lessons to become more
proficient in language skills. These lessons introduce concepts in context. They
highlight specific words and concepts with bold print and rebus clues. Students
are given lots of practice to reinforce the skills they are learning. Pictures
are clear and age-appropriate.
These lessons are great for teachers because they target
grade-appropriate concepts and build background knowledge. Teachers get
step-by-step instructions on how to use the lessons with beginning,
intermediate, and advanced students. There are suggestions for ideas and words
to be shared in the student's native language. The lessons signal when a phonics
skill is unfamiliar to speakers of a specific language. They point out idioms
and words with multiple meanings that might cause confusion. There are
suggestions given for extension activities that apply the skill in a real-world
situation.
The books are divided into four units. The content of these
units varies with the grade level. There is a chart for keeping track of
individual student progress. At the end there are two certificates to be given
to students -- one is for effort, the other for attaining a specific skill. Each
book also has an answer key and a student take-home book. Sometimes a higher
grade book repeats exercises appearing in an earlier grade level book. Example:
The take home book in the last two grade level books are the same. Details on
individual titles are below.
ESL: Building English Proficiency, Grades K-1. Units in this book cover readiness, alphabet letters,
numbers, and vocabulary. Readiness teaches basic shapes, common
prepositions, some opposites, same and different, missing parts, sequence
(first, next, last), name, address, phone number, and spoken and written

In the alphabet

beginning with the letters of the alphabet. They circle one of two words which
matches a picture. They color the pictures that begin with the same letter as a
given word. Example: for "c" students hear and read the sentence "The cat
has a cup." They circle the word (cat or cup) which matches
the proper picture. And they color the pictures that begin like cat.
The unit on
numbers is handled pretty much the same as the unit on the alphabet except
that students color the picture that shows the proper number and then color that
number of objects from a group of objects that might contain more than that
number. Numbers go up to ten.
The vocabulary
unit covers some basic words in the following subject areas: clothes,
colors, face words, food, house, pets, shapes, signs, ways to move, and weather.
Some activities used in this section are cut and paste, songs, coloring,
matching by drawing lines from one column to another, and more. The take-home book

Schaffer, 2007. This book includes many activities for grades K-5 that

Visualizing Language; Acting in the Arena: The Imaginary Real World; Story
Telling; and Games, Word Play, Songs, and Chants. After reading the introduction
to this book and taking a brief look at the activities, it is evident that the
authors understand the importance of physical movement to young learners, and
they incorporate it into the learning instead of trying to squelch it. The
authors also recognize how short attention spans can be in when listening to a
language one doesn't understand, so they do not expect student to sit and listen
for very long at a time. Student pages are reproducible for one classroom's
students. 122 pages. BTH-3960. $13.46-D
