CHILDREN'S EDUCATION

This page is for parents who want to know how to evaluate how their children are doing in school and how to help them  to do their best. Some of these books are also useful for home schoolers who want an overview of what they need to teach at each grade level and some supplementary lessons or background information in all the subjects needed. For more specific help in the various subject areas, go back to the catalog and look under the specific subjects your child needs help or review in.

Making the Grade. This series by Barrron's is designed to help parent's keep their children on track educationally, whether their children are in public, private, or home school. Each book begins with advice and web site links for parents -- especially for parents who have children with learning differences or for those who teach their children  at home. The first chapter is on how to use the book. Here are some relevant points from that first chapter:

It's not a textbook. It can be used to supplement any curriculum or to jumpstart the fundamentals.

Each subject section has both teaching pages for parents and student pages. Pages are perforated for easy removal so parents and students can easily share the book. There are plenty of hands-on activities incorporated into the lessons.

The teacher pages begin with a lesson objective and background information for parents that explains the importance of the concepts in the lesson. Emphasis is placed on showing how what is taught applies to everyday life. A list of materials needed for the lesson and a vocabulary list of important words are also included in this section. There are step-by-step instructions for actually teaching the lessons that parents who feel insecure about beginning the teaching process will have the support they need to get started.

Student pages follow the teaching pages of each lesson, and offer your child the opportunity to practice what you've taught in a fun way. Student pages are colorful and graphically appealing.

Each book also includes an introduction at the beginning  that explains the special characteristics of a child at the grade level the book covers. Books are available in this series for grades K-6. If the one you need isn't listed here yet, just email and ask for it. This page is still under construction. Here are the available books:

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
