Fearless Phonics: A Phonics Handbook with Rules and Super Word Lists!  by Linda Schwartz. The Learning Works. This book, with limited reproduction rights, answers the questions most teachers and parents have about the rules of phonics, such as when a c is soft or hard, when an o is long or short, or how consonant blends work. Not only are the explanations simple, but there are also lots of examples.

The first two sections of the book, "Conquering Consonants" and "Vowel Victories," show how to decode most words by associating sound with spelling. These two sections contain generalizations followed by rules and samples.

The last two sections contain helpful lists, including basic sight words, rhyming word families, and common prefixes, suffixes and roots with definitions and sample words. There is also help for dividing words into syllables and accenting syllables.

Bold graphics add eye appeal. This book is ideal for all ages, since the graphics are based on letters, and there are no childish pictures to hurt the self-esteem of older children and adults. BTH-626. $12.59-D

RiteIntoRdg.jpg (8161 bytes)Right into Reading Program : A Phonics-Based Reading and Comprehension Program
by Jane Ervin. Published by Educators Publishing Service

This series teaches phonics to either beginning readers or older children who have difficulty learning to read. It combines two important kinds of instruction. First, it provides a solid foundation in basic phonics, presented in a carefully ordered sequence of "bite-sized" lessons that will not discourage young students. It also contains a wide selection of reading selections that appeal to diverse interests: adventures, folk tales, history, science fiction, biographies, and animals studies. Reading formats include a map, a menu, an ad, a newspaper article and a recipe. But they only contain the phonics sounds that have been taught.

The reading selections are a bit longer than those in many other programs (The longest in Book One are about two - three pages long.) Comprehension and critical thinking skills are integrated into the entire program. Students will need to  become involved, question, and search for answers. They will learn to see cause and effect, come to logical conclusions, and understand figures of speech. They will also develop new vocabulary and the ability to understand and use words in many contexts. Students also will have the opportunity to practice writing after every reading selection.

Book 1 covers short vowels, blends, syllables, and long vowels.

Book 2 covers consonant teams (sh, ch, th, and wh),   vowels with r and y , and irregular double vowels.

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail (barbsbooks@sbcglobal.net), since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
