HUGE SALE

Graphic America by Crabtree Publishing Company

This history series in graphic format is aimed at readers ages 8-9. I think it would also be useful for getting
reluctant readers in higher grades interested in American history.
Each book also contains a time line, glossary, and index in the back, and these are written in upper case, white letters on black background. There are no colons between words and their definitions in the glossary. Instead the terms are in bold face and the definitions in regular type face. The graphic format will grab the attention of young people, and they will find themselves learning history they might not have thought of reading in another form.
Books are 32 pages each and contain web links to related sites.

Inventions and Inventors: How American Discoveries Changed the World by Darren Sechrist. Crabtree, 2009. This book highlights the accomplishments of some of America's greatest inventors -- people such as Benjamin Franklin, Samuel B. Morse, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, George Washington Carver, Henry Ford, Guglielmo Marconi, and the Wright Brothers -- all in the format of the popular graphic novels. BTH-5103. $8.96-D

Westward, Ho! How American Expanded by Darren Sechrist. Crabtree, 2009. In this book young readers follow the expansion of the United States to the West from the signing of the Louisiana Purchase to California Gold Rush and the rush to the Comstock Lode. The book also covers the early settlement of Texas and California, the war with Mexico, the coming of Christian missionaries to the Oregon country and the wagon trains that followed them, and the Mormon migration to Utah. BTH-5105. $8.96-D

Taming the West: A Nation Moving Forward Together by Darren Sechrist. Crabtree, 2009. This presentation of the settlement of the West in graphic format concentrates a lot on the relationships between Native Americans and the Americans who were moving into lands occupied by Native Americans. It also covers outlaws, well-known lawmen, the role of women in the West and the building of the transcontinental railroad. BTH-5106. $8.96-D

Free at Last: How the Freeing of the Slaves Changed American History by Darren Sechrist. Crabtree, 2009. This book covers the history of African Americans from the Civil War until the present day. Topics covered include The Emancipation Proclamation, Abolition, Sharecropping, Civil Rights, Jim Crow Laws, the rise of the Klu Klux Klan, and the continuing hope for future improvement in racial relations. BTH-5107. $8.96-D

The Revolution in Industry: Machines that Changed the World by Darren Sechrist. Crabtree, 2009. This book covers the development of technology from people powered boats and agriculture to our modern day sources of power. People power progresses to using animals in agriculture and transportation, on to wind and water power to grind grain, sail ships, and saw lumber. A major breakthrough in technology came with the invention of the steam engine, which led to steam trains. Then the internal combustion engine made the automobile and the first aviation  possible. Aviation advances included jet engines and  rockets. Finally scientists were able to harness nuclear power for submarines and spacecraft.  BTH-5108. $8.96-D

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.
You can fax your purchase orders to 805-237-8639, but it's good to follow up with a phone call in a couple of days to make sure we got it, if you did not receive a delivery confirmation email. Please include an email address with your purchase order in case we have questions and so we can send your delivery confirmation number to you.  You can also attach a signed purchase order to an email.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail (barbsbooks@sbcglobal.net), since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
We receive a small commission from some links to third party sites with whom we have an affiliate relationship.
