Literature
Activities for Reluctant Readers (Intermediate Level) by John and Patty
Carratello. Teacher Created Materials. The authors explain that reluctant
readers are made, not born. They explain what makes children learn to love or
hate reading. There are ideas for helping children learn to love books. At the
beginning of the book is a Teacher's Guide and a Parents' Guide (to help get
needed support at home.) The rest of the book follows this format: First there
is a method for stimulating and interest in reading which is introduced with a
page that can be colored and displayed in a learning center. The center should
be filled with books related to the method described on that page. Then students
should be introduced to the selected books and the activities which support the
method which has been chosen. We might also think of these as themes rather than
methods. Here are some examples taken from p. 7
