The theme in this book is the beach. Students will discover commas lost in the surf, meet subjects and verbs more disagreeable than crabs, and find clauses that are caught in lobster claws. As they encounter various ocean and beach related exercises, students will learn to find subjects and predicates; identify simple, complex and compound sentences; identify parts of speech; identify, form and use possessive nouns; identify and use verb tenses; understand and use subject-verb agreement; identify and correct dangling modifiers; identify and use independent and subordinate clauses; use proper punctuation and capitalization; and create, explain, and properly punctuate common contractions. 64 pages, including answers. Limited reproduction rights for classroom use. For grades 6-8. BTH-3041. $8.06-D
This book uses the "Rule-Example-Practice" format that is very effective for independent learning. It provides an assessment at the beginning to see what needs to be learned, has reviews at the end of each of the four units, and a test at the end to compare with the one at the beginning to see what has been learned. Special features include a thorough Table of Contents, a list of over 70 language terms, a list of irregular verbs for reference, a list of commonly misused words and their meanings, along with examples, an answer key, and an index. BTH-1150. $13.46-D
I Have, Who Has? by Trisha Callella. Creative Teaching Press,
2007. These interactive card games consist of a series of question and answer
cards. Students are actively engaged as each player answers a question and then
asks the next one. When students reach the last card, they will find that it
refers back to the first card. Requires minimal preparation but results in
maximum participation and effort. Each book has about 206 pages and reviews a
variety of standards-based language topics that are grade-appropriate in content
areas of comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and more.
Language Usage and Practice Series, Harcourt Achieve (Steck-Vaughn), 2007. Books in this series focus on the key language skills of capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, vocabulary, sentences, and composition. Books in this series are easy for students to use independently for practice, but in lower grades the teacher will need to explain the directions. Lessons are organized into a series of units arranged in a logical sequence. Students focus on one selected skill at a time, rules are clearly stated at the beginning of the each lesson, and there are examples to illustrate the rules. Key terms are introduced in bold type and directions are clear and uncomplicated. The exercises themselves take a variety of forms: Students are sometimes asked to match, circle, or underline sentence elements, but they are also asked to use what they have learned by writing an original sentence or rewriting a sentence. Each book has a special unit for teaching composition skills. Additional features include unit tests to check student progress, assessments to determine which skills your students need to practice, a reproducible Language Tips hand-out to give each student for reference. There is also a skills correlation chart for teacher use that covers all levels from grades 1-high school. 128 pages, includes answers. Language Usage and Practice Grade 5: BTH-3061. $13.49-D Language Usage and Practice Grade High School : BTH-3065. $13.49-D

We're in the Pacific Time Zone We prefer you ask your questions about products
and availability by
e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and
keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in
your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer
unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
