If you would like a compelling and honest account of the tragedy of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, this book should meet the need for those of upper elementary grades and up. Reading level is for grades 6-8, but interest level can go up through high school. The book first tells  the story of what happened on September 11, 2001. This is followed by a history of the World Trade Center. After that is a chapter on the relationship between Islam and the United States and some of the background leading up to 9-11. There are also some eye-witness stories from "Ground Zero," and coverage of the recovery effort. At the end the author tells us what we may expect to happen in the years ahead and the long-term impact of the attacks.

Victory in the Pacific by Albert Marrin. Beautiful Feet Books. © 1983. In this book, Marrin tells the story of the Pacific Theater of World War II, beginning with the events leading up to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. He goes on to explain to the uninitiated the basics of how navies work and describes various types of navy ships and what they do. He especially zeros in on the aircraft carriers. Then follow the vivid descriptions of the land, sea, and air battles that make up the action in the rest of the war, with special attention paid to the leaders on both sides and their strategies. The book ends with the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that brought Japan to the point of surrender and peace to the Pacific at last. BTH-2914. $13.95*
 

 

 

The Yanks are Coming: The United States in the First World War by Albert Marrin. Beautiful Feet,Books, trade paper. 248 pages.  Marrin begins with the dramatic sinking of the Lusitania, and goes on to discuss the events that led to the beginning of the war. He explains how President Wilson tried to keep America neutral, but after numerous saboteurs had done their dirty work and Germany announced its submarines would no longer refrain from firing on American ships he finally was forced to enter the war. He describes America's role in World War I from it's belated entry, through its battles on land, sea, and in the air, until the final hard-won victory. He re-creates a routine flying mission in the first fragile fighter planes, shows how the soldiers on the front lived, and combines the general history of the war with individual tales of heroism and endurance.  This is suitable for anyone junior high age and above. Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.
 You can fax your purchase orders to 805-237-8639, but it's good to follow up with a phone call in a couple of days to make sure we got it, if you did not receive a delivery confirmation email. Please include an email address with your purchase order in case we have questions and so we can send your delivery confirmation number to you.  You can also attach a signed purchase order to an email.

 We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail (barbsbooks@sbcglobal.net), since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
