Chances Are...Making probability and Statistics Fun to Learn and Easy to Teach
by Nancy Pfenning. Prufrock Press, ©1998. For any beginner from the middle grades to early college. It's best to use it with gifted students in grades 4-8. This book serves as an introduction to probability -- the study of random behavior, and statistics -- the formal treatment of data. The purpose of the probability section of this book is to present an overview with the minimal amount of theory needed for students to be able to grasp the section on statistics which follows it. The study is simplified by working through clear examples and including some uncomplicated experiments. The purpose of the statistics portion of the book is to facilitate student examination of the most basic aspects of statistical theory in simple settings with very manageable numbers in such a way that they can see how the concrete results tie in with the abstract theory.
Topics covered in the book include Counting; Probabilities; Probability Distributions; Statistical Inference; Beginning Statistics; Sample Mean and Sample Proportion; Histograms and the Normal Distribution; Standard Deviation; Handling Data in Different Forms; and Statistical Inference II. In the Appendix is a Note to the Instructor, a Sample Syllabus, a List of Special Materials Needed for Experiments, and a Class Survey. There are also a Glossary and an Index. This appears to be a consumable workbooks, since reproduction is forbidden without written permission from the publisher. 164 pages. BTH-1464. $22.46-D

Not Likely! Math Activities to Support Learning about Probability, Chance and Data by Rob Nelson. Educational Impressions, 2008. This book is divided into 3 sections. Section One: At Home is designed to be completed by children and parents cooperatively and forms an introduction to chance and data. Section Two: Quickies comprises activities that involve students physically in the topic; e.g., “How many times can you get the ping-pong ball in an egg carton?” Section Three: Activity Cards provides a range of chance and data activities. Grades 3–5. BTH-5242. $10.76
Probability Activities for Problem Solving & Skills Reinforcement by Robert Lovell. Key Curriculum Press,1993. Punched for three-hole notebook. This book consists of a series of 61 lesson guides, each designed for one class period. The unique problems spur discussions and motivate students. They will also be reviewing their skills in whole numbers, fractions, and decimals as they improve their problem-solving skills. Palindromes, magic squares, alpha-numerics, brain busters, and problems from The Guinness Book of World Records appear in many lessons. For grades 7-11. Answers for problems are included. 308 pages. BTH-4982. Follow link for cover art, current price, and availability. If this is out of stock, I can order it for you quickly.
Probability and Statistics: Exploring Probability and Statistics through Independent Activities by Wendy Osterman. Creative Teaching Press, 2005. This book makes the basic principles of probability and statistics easy for students to understand as the author walks them through the subject with step-by-step instructions. The book does not assume that students have any background in the subject, so she starts at the beginning and progresses to calculating probability in ratios and percentages. Students will learn to read and create tables and graphs with the data provided or collected. Students will learn the vocabulary used in this subject; calculate odds and create models; explore combinations and permutations; find the mean, median, and mode and learn the difference between them; convert ratios to decimals and decimals to percents; and more. One can use this resource as a self-teaching guide or as part of a larger unit study. For grades 5-8. Student lessons are reproducible for one classroom. BTH-4525. $18.89-D
Probability Simulations with CD-Rom by Mary Jean Winter and Ronald J. Carlson. 2000. The investigations in this book reinforce the basic concepts of probability, can be used to enrich any mathematics curriculum, and are ideal for extended class periods. Any graphing calculator with a random-number generator can be used to complete the 13 probability simulations. Calculator programs for the activities can be downloaded from the accompanying CD onto Texas Instruments TI-82 and TI-83, and Casio™ CFX-9970, 9870, and 9850 graphing calculators, entered by hand from the program listings, or adapted to other calculators following the program annotations. This book will supplement courses in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, integrated algebra, and precalculus. Book is punched to fit into three-hole binder. Answers are provided. 144 pages. BTH-4983. We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday -
Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.
You can fax your purchase orders to 805-237-8639, but it's good to follow up with a phone call in a couple of days to make sure we got it, if you did not receive a delivery confirmation email. Please include an email address with your purchase order in case we have questions and so we can send your delivery confirmation number to you. You can also attach a signed purchase order to an email.
We prefer you ask your questions about products
and availability by
e-mail (barbsbooks@sbcglobal.net), since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and
keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in
your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer
unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or
"Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam
messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee
your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
We receive a small commission from some links to third party sites with whom we have an affiliate relationship.
