Mystery Science: Case of the Missing Lunch by Connie Gatlin. For grades 3-5. As students enter the classroom, they will notice something is amiss. As they view the area cordoned off with tape, they will discover several lunch boxes, an empty thermos, a white powder, cookie crumbs, and footprints. This is the beginning of a crime scene investigation that requires experimentation and critical thinking to solve. Students will use chemistry, observation, and analysis of the scientific data, and also personal information about the four suspects to determine who stole the cookies and milk out of one of the lunches. As they work on solving the mystery, students will find real-world applications for science concepts.

Contained in this book are a brief introduction, a story that introduces the mystery, a map of the crime scene, a list of materials, directions for each crime lab, statements made by the suspects, detailed instructions for the preparation and set-up of each lab, a list of possible vocabulary or spelling words for the mystery, and an explanation of what happened. There are step by step instructions for the teacher on how to prepare and complete the activity. This can't be used as a time filler or be haphazardly thrown together. It does require careful preparation, but it will be fun for the students as a chance of pace in science and problem solving. Student materials are reproducible for classroom use. 48 pages. BTH-425. $9.87-D

The Periodic Table: Critical Thinking and Chemistry  by Cindy Blobaum. Dandy Lion, ©2004. Reproducible for classroom use. For grades 5-8. The author of this book wants to introduce the periodic table to middle school students in such a way that they will learn to see it as a friend to use -- not just something to memorize. This book encourages students to approach the periodic table from a perspective of ongoing scientific exploration so that they may discover it through creative hands-on activities rather than just reading information about it. The objective of the unit is to let students become familiar with the structure and history of the periodic table of elements as they practice basic laboratory skills.

The unit has two related activities, each of which occupies several lessons. The first deals with piecing a pattern that has bee scrambled. The second activity is the "Cookie Calendar," in which students  determine the weights of the ingredients in chocolate chip cookies and create a table which organizes this information.

This is a standards-based unit and requires two or three 45-minute class periods to complete. Background information on the periodic table and its creator, Dmitri Mendeleev, is provided. 32 pages. BTH-1561. $8.09-D Out of print. Supply limited to stock on hand.

Robots and Artificial Intelligence: A young Person's Guide to Smart Machines, by Carol S. Lewis. Physical Science by David Bethel. Harcourt Achieve (Steck-Vaughn), 2006. This worktext covers the basics of physical science that need to be learned in high school. Topics covered are Tools of Physical Science; Motion; Force; Energy; Heat; Waves; Electricity and Magnetism. The book is designed to be used in a tutoring or home situation to help students who need extra help or review.

Each unit follows the same sequence in covering the topic. First are Key Terms, which include all bold-faced words and the definitions, in the order they appear in the text. Then comes the clear and concise text, which itself is divided into several sections to guide the student into a logical sequence without overwhelming him. Then there is a review which consists of both short answer and multiple-choice questions, which follow the same sequence as the text. Each unit concludes with a series of engaging activities that help students use what they've been studying. Answers and Glossary are found at the end of the book.  128 pages. BTH-1879. $15.29-D

Practical Science: Standards-Based Science Experiments by Ellen McPeek. Harcourt Achieve, 2009. Books in this series provide science experiments at the elementary level that use easy-to-find materials. Each book features three units:  earth, life, and physical science. Each unit has 12 lessons -- each with three experiments and one background page. So there are 36 experiments in each book. For each experiment you will find a purpose, a materials list, procedure, results, and conclusions. In addition, each book shows connections to other areas of science, has correlations to the National Science Education Standards, and provides safety rules, a lab sheet, a glossary, and answers.  96 pages, each book.

Science by the Grade, Essentials and Exploration, Steck-Vaughn, 2008. Books in this series can stand alone as a grade level science course or supplement whatever text a student may be using. Each lesson follows the same format, guiding students through science concepts in a logical sequence. The lessons are straightforward and contain all needed information, so students can use the books independently, as well as in class. The lessons include specific topic instruction, key terms, review activities in standardized test format, and experiment pages. Users will also find a diagnostic assessment, science fair project ideas, a glossary, and bound-in answers. The concepts taught are correlated to National Science Education Standards and also include the International Astronomical Association's 2006 guidelines regarding the eight-planet solar system.  128 pages. Remedial Science for Elementary Students

Focus On Science Series from Steck-Vaughn, 2004. This easy-to-understand series provides foundational science concepts, practice activities, and review for students with various learning styles who may need a simpler style and lower reading level than other students. The student books in this series present manageable amounts of content followed directly by practice and review. There are links to the Harcourt web site which has additional science resources and a tool to match materials to state standards. Each book is organized into three parts: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science.

The teacher editions provide information about the program, a standards chart, a content themes chart that covers all the books, a lesson scope and sequence, and a master list for hands-on activities. There are also  instructional strategies for presenting chapters and units, ideas for engaging students in these studies, and ways to present features such as hands-on activities and career information. We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
