Where did they catch the disease? Student take the role of public health workers as they track down the source of the illness. This problem-based unit combines science, social studies, math, research, group collaboration, and communication as students work in teams to solve he problem and present their findings. This unit should be very relevant to students who are hearing about new diseases on the media quite frequently now. Student pages are reproducible for classroom use. 88 pages. BTH-23. $11.66-D

Mystery Science: Case of the Missing Lunch by Connie Gatlin. For grades 3-5. As students enter the classroom, they will notice something is amiss. As they view the area cordoned off with tape, they will discover several lunch boxes, an empty thermos, a white powder, cookie crumbs, and footprints. This is the beginning of a crime scene investigation that requires experimentation and critical thinking to solve. Students will use chemistry, observation, and analysis of the scientific data, and also personal information about the four suspects to determine who stole the cookies and milk out of one of the lunches. As they work on solving the mystery, students will find real-world applications for science concepts.

Contained in this book are a brief introduction, a story that introduces the mystery, a map of the crime scene, a list of materials, directions for each crime lab, statements made by the suspects, detailed instructions for the preparation and set-up of each lab, a list of possible vocabulary or spelling words for the mystery, and an explanation of what happened. There are step by step instructions for the teacher on how to prepare and complete the activity. This can't be used as a time filler or be haphazardly thrown together. It does require careful preparation, but it will be fun for the students as a chance of pace in science and problem solving. Student materials are reproducible for classroom use. 48 pages. BTH-425. $9.87-D

The Periodic Table: Critical Thinking and Chemistry  by Cindy Blobaum. Dandy Lion, ©2004. Reproducible for classroom use. For grades 5-8. The author of this book wants to introduce the periodic table to middle school students in such a way that they will learn to see it as a friend to use -- not just something to memorize. This book encourages students to approach the periodic table from a perspective of ongoing scientific exploration so that they may discover it through creative hands-on activities rather than just reading information about it. The objective of the unit is to let students become familiar with the structure and history of the periodic table of elements as they practice basic laboratory skills.

The unit has two related activities, each of which occupies several lessons. The first deals with piecing a pattern that has bee scrambled. The second activity is the "Cookie Calendar," in which students  determine the weights of the ingredients in chocolate chip cookies and create a table which organizes this information.

This is a standards-based unit and requires two or three 45-minute class periods to complete. Background information on the periodic table and its creator, Dmitri Mendeleev, is provided. 32 pages. BTH-1561. $8.09-D

Read and Understand Science Series. The books in this series have nonfiction and realistic fiction stories which address the objectives drawn from the National Science Education Standards.  They cover the areas of life science, physical science, earth and space science, and science and technology. Since science content necessitates the use of specific vocabulary, this science vocabulary was discounted in determining the reading level for the stories in these books. Page 3 in each book has a list of suggested science vocabulary and other challenging words that were used in each story, so that the teacher may introduce it before the story is read.

Each story is followed by three pages of  activities covering specific skills.  Comprehension activities take two forms -- multiple choice and "write the answer. " There are also vocabulary activities and a related language or science activity. The publisher suggests the stories be used for shared and guiding reading experiences. They provide excellent opportunities to teach nonfiction reading skills such as scanning for information and gleaning information from illustrations and captions. The books are reproducible for classroom use and ready to use. Each book is 144 pages and includes illustrations which support and enhance the text.

Science Arts: Discovering Science Through Art Experiences by MaryAnn Kohl and Jean Potter. Bright Ring Publishing, 1993. For children 3-10.  The activities in this book will work both at home and in a classroom. They are designed to awaken the imagination, challenge the mind, and delight the artist and scientist within each child. The art experiences are also like science experiments, and the science related to each project is explained in a box on the bottom of each project page. A chart of contents indicates the area of science covered, the season best suited for the project, an age suggestion, the art techniques used, amount of preparation needed, difficulty level, and more. Topics covered are water and air; light and sight; motion and energy; reaction and matter; and nature and earth. There are over 100 activities in all, including projects such as crystal bubbles, dancing rabbits, building beans, magnetic rubbing, stencil leaves, magic cabbage, marble sculpture, paint pendulum, ice structures, the volcano, bottle optics, chromatography, straw painting, frozen paper, marshmallow tower, spaghetti painting, invisible paint, sculptured pretzels, sand drawings, and many more. 142 pages. BTH-3503. $14.36-D

Weather Report by Mike Graf. Fearon Teacher Aids. Contains lesson plans, worksheets, and experiments that will teach not only the hows and whys of weather, but also some elementary physics and geography. There are more than 80 reproducible worksheets (with answer keys), and dozens of experiments. We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
