obviously, after a quick look through, is not.

The Art
of China: Spirit and Society, by Werner Speiser. Greystone Press,
c.1960. Hardcover with dustjacket. 258 pages. Part of the Art of the World
Series. The author of this book is well-qualified: He was director of the Museum
of East Asian Art in Cologne and a Professor of East Asian Art at the University
of Cologne. He has spent a lifetime studying Chinese Art. Since China has given
the world so much, Speiser has divided the book into ten chapters, each of which
discusses an epoch. As he writes about Chinese painting, sculpture, silk
scrolls, jewelry and ceramics, he relates each form of art to the thought of its
time period. Also included is a chronological table which shows the artists in
relation to historical events; a thorough bibliography, 64 plates in full color,
and other illustrations.
Condition: VG/G: Boards have bumped corners and there is a small light stain near the top of the spine. Tail of spine is bent in a bit. Jacket has some chipping, creasing, and small tears, mostly near the edges. It also has some small stains on the under side where they don't' show. End papers are colored illustrations of art reproductions. BT-3396. $15.00. (B)
Art of
Rome, Etruria, and Magna Graecia by German Hafner. Harry N. Abrams,
Inc., 1969. Hardcover with dust jacket. 264 pages. Professor German Hafner
analyzes twelve centuries of man's creative endeavor, and traces the intricate
pattern of cultural and artistic relationships between the various regions of
Italy, Greece, and the lands of the Orient. Illustration themes include dancers,
wrestlers, warriors, horsemen, centaurs, gods, goddesses, and other themes that
inspired the people of the Mediterranean lands to creativity. There are also
superb photographs of buildings from these cultures that still survive, proving
that architectural achievements were among the greatest of this period's
accomplishments. Art reproductions often depict nudity. This book is written at
an adult level. There are 251 plates, including 108 in full color, a map,
chronological tables, and a bibliography. End papers are art reproductions. This
book is part of the Panorama of World Art Series. Condition: VG/VG. Dust
jacket has light edge and corner wear with some chipping (especially at spine
ends) and a few places where surface color has become dull or rubbed off some.

Beat of a Drum: The Story of Drums and Other Percussion Instruments, by Robert Surplus. Lerner, 1963. Library Binding, library discard with usual baggage. Covers and endpages are dirty. Ink mark on p. 17. Corners and ends of spine are worn to boards, and top of spine is chewed up for about one half inch down. Text pages are clean and readable. Reading level is grade 4 and up. 48 pages. Traces the history of drums and describes the different types of percussion instruments and their uses. ABE #169, 3.00-U (B)

history of pottery. It contains full-color illustrations of the art from the

Century -- they are here to view. 159 pages. Condition: Good: Light wear to

Van Gogh's Van Goghs: Masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam by Richard Kendall with contributions by John Leighton and Sjraar van Heugten. Published by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1988, 2nd printing. Soft cover with self flaps that are almost page size and have painting reproductions on them. 160 pages. Size: 11.5 x 10 inches. This gorgeous book contains reproductions in full color of over 70 paintings from Van Gogh's earliest works done in his native Holland to the last works made just before his tragic death in Auvers-sur-Oise. These are the paintings that remained in the Van Gogh family, being passed from Vincent to his brother Theo, then to his widow, then to her son Vincent Willem van Gogh, who eventually established the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation and Museum in Amsterdam, which still has the paintings today. This book is a result of the exhibition of 70 of these paintings at the national Gallery of Art, Washington, and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1998 and 1999 and serves as a guide to the exhibits. Condition is very good: There are crease marks on the covers where the ends of the self flaps have pressed against them, and there are some blue ink smears on page 7. Softcover, 1992, 2nd printing. Provides clear explanations of music basics, followed
immediately by exercises, examples, and musical applications. Includes written and aural
exercises, musical problems for the creative application of new knowledge in musical
contexts, "focus on skill" sections that review and reinforce concepts
learned over several chapters. Amazon sell the new edition of this book for 49.95.
But since the previous owner did some of the exercises (in pencil) and highlighted a few
paragraphs of text and left the book looking somewhat less than new, I'm letting this go

and Mary English. 1958. Intended as a comprehensive music program for junior high or high
school students. Includes exploratory experiences and cultural background. Authors have
given careful attention to comfortable vocal ranges, provision for all kinds of
instrumental integration and keyboard experiences and opportunities for personal
expression. There is a Vol. I which is supposed to precede this, but I don't have it. This
book covers Latin American music, jazz, the science of sound, a history of melody, legends
of the sea, conducting and introduction to the orchestra, a brief history of musical
periods, and supplementary material for many holidays. Practice keyboard picture on inside

the books are heavily underlined with highlighter and/or pencil. Cover shows wear and has
