DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE?
Did you know there are some places on the Internet where you can join writing communities and write about any G-rated subject you choose? On some of these sites you can even earn a bit of cash from affiliate programs or by sharing in ad revenues. I have a lot of fun interacting with people on these sites. Many are teachers or home schooling parents who want to earn a bit of extra cash. All of these sites let you choose your subject and express yourself. It's a good idea when you sign up to have an idea in mind of what you might want to write about. It doesn't have to be long, but you should have the general subject and a title in mind when you click the link to join because they will get you started on your introduction right away. You can later change anything but the URL on Squidoo. Other people will give you help on some of the sites. Here are two of my favorites. The links are to my profile pages. You can see some of what I've written on the sites to get an idea of what form is typical of each site.
FLASH! A NEW WRITING SITE HAS STARTED
It's called Wizzley. It is very much like HubPages, but it has been started by a group fromSquidoo, most of whom I've gotten to know on line. Check out the details. It supports affiliate programs and makes it easy to get paid. I think it's a great group and it's easy to get in on the ground floor now. It's for those who want to write original content only -- no duplication of other published material allowed -- even if you wrote it yourself. Check it out and join here.
If you like what you see and want to start writing yourself, I'd much appreciate your joining from a link on one of my articles, especially on this first site, Squidoo. At the bottom of the page at the end of the above link is a big blue button that says "Create a Lens." Click it and you are on the way. In the middle of the page you will find a list of my lenses (We call each article a lens because we are focusing on our unique view of a particular topic.) The list of my lenses is under the heading All of my Lenses.
A second writing site is called Hub Pages. Here's the
link to my profile there:
Join HubPages, where you can write about a topic you love — for free! Includes potential to earn royalties and commissions.
Hub pages, like Squidoo, has a solid community of people who like to write. The formatting is a bit easier on Hub Pages and it's as easy to use as a blogging site. if you are a self-starter and like to work at your own pace, you might prefer Hub Pages. If you want to feel part of a very active community and need a lot of motivation to start and finish your work, you might prefer Squidoo to start. A lot of people, myself included, write for both sites and a few others besides. A lot of teachers and home schooling parents use the sites to share lesson plans, whereas some people use the sites to sell through various affiliate programs. Be sure and read the guidelines and policies before you publish your writing. Both sites are free to use.
You might be wondering how these sites are different than just blogging. For me the difference is that blogging is lonelier. Squidoo and Hub Pages are writing social networks. You make friends, join groups of people with writing topics similar to yours, and at least Squidoo even has clubs on Ning that are very helpful in helping you find an audience. It's not much fun to write and have no one to read what you write. If you have information or experiences others might be interested in,. do try one of these sites. You don't have to be a professional to participate, but after a lot of practice and encouragement on these sites, who knows? Maybe you will acquire the skills you need to find an even larger audience. The sky is the limit.

Core Skills Writing Series by Harcourt Achieve (Steck-Vaughn). This series, new in March, 2007, is great. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you've been looking for a writing program for elementary and middle school students that meets national standards, helps students to prepare for the writing portion of standardized tests, this is it. Available for grades 1-8, it has clear explanations, bulleted hints, and helpful questions which enable students to actively review and improve their writing. What I like best about it is that it incorporates grammar and usage, including parts of speech, into the teaching of writing instead of leaving them as isolated subjects. Students learn what they can use and apply much better than they learn by just underlining and circling words in sentences.
The other grade levels are organized into the same units and cover more or less material as appropriate for the grade level of the children it teaches. Answers are also included. 128 pages each. Here is the ordering information:

If you Want to Write: A Book about Art, Independence, and Spirit by Brenda Ueland. Graywolf Press. 179 pages. Carl Sandburg called this "the best book ever written about how to write." The author published six million words in her 93 years, and she says she had two rules she followed "absolutely" --to tell the truth, and not to do anything she didn't want to do. My favorite chapter title is "Why Women who do much housework should neglect it for their writing." Cat. #155597-2608.

Painless Junior Writing by Donna Christina Oliverio. Barron's, 2006. Sammy Octopus leads elementary writers on a reading and writing adventure where they will learn all basic writing skills. This is a writing book like none I've ever seen. The theme is sea-based as Sammy invites each reader to be captain of his own ship -- Authorship. The purpose of the book is to get young authors motivated to write as they learn the A-B-Seas of writing. Although there are suggestions (exercises) to try, this does not look like a workbook. Though the characters are a bit wacky, I think readers will identify with them. On page 3, for example, Turtle says: "I'm trying to write a story, but it's hard to get started. When there is a blank piece of paper in front of me, I feel like a school bus stuck in mud or snow." If you're looking for an unusual writing text for your grade 4-6 grade child, this just might fill the bill. It teaches basic writing skills such as choosing a topic, writing a rough draft and revising, story writing, writing beginnings and endings, playing with words, using parts of speech effectively, using figurative language and details, and sharing the finished writing with others. 164 pages. BTH-3432. $8.09-D

Write Source: Simply the best English handbook available for grades 4-8. Cat. #01509, $16.50*
The Mechanics of Writing: A workbook designed to teach capitalization, punctuation, the most common spelling rules, choosing the proper homonym, using plurals, using abbreviations, and proofreading. I use this when elementary students start to use Write Source. It begins by helping students learn to use the handbook. This book can be adapted to use with Write Source 2000. Student book is 7.50*. Teacher book with answers is 12.50*
The Revising Process: A workbook designed to go with Write Source. Can be adapted to go with Write Source 2000. I use this when students have finished Mechanics of Writing (listed above). Teaches students to use the Write Source handbook and a thesaurus. Helps students learn to choose specific nouns, vivid verbs and adjectives, specific sensory words, and figurative language in their writing. It also helps them learn to avoid and correct common sentence errors: fragments, comma splices and run-ons, rambling sentences, wordiness, misplaced modifiers, agreement problems, and pronoun problems. Students also learn to add strength and color to their sentences, use parallel structure, and revise their paragraphs for clarity, smoothness, sentence variety, supporting details, and organization. Student book is 7.50*. Teacher book with answers is 12.50*.
Basic Writing: A workbook designed to go with Write Source. Can be adapted to go with Write Source 2000. For students at the middle school or junior high level or students who have finished the two workbooks listed above. It teaches narrative writing, basic sentence information (parts of sentence, types of sentences, modifiers), parts of speech and how they relate to writing, subject-verb agreement, descriptive writing, strengthening sentence-writing skills, figurative language, expository writing, avoiding common sentence errors, and persuasive writing. It reviews the basic mechanics skills with emphasis on capitalization and punctuation. This book covers more and is fatter than the preceding books in the series. Student book is 10.50*. Teacher book is 12.50*. Since the teacher book does little more than supply answers, and the original writing assignments in this book do not have exact answers, I don't think it is especially useful except for the mechanics section at the back. (Some of the student books are out of stock indefinitely.)
Write Source 2000: Same content as Write Source with more modern format. Writing information is in the front with grammar and usage information in a "yellow pages" section at the back. The book itself is more up-to-date in its maps and calendar pages, since it was published later. Cat. #1510, $18.50*
Writers Inc: The BEST English handbook for grades 8-13. Same format as Write Source 2000. Cat. #1511, 19.95, softcover. *

Writing Through the Year: Building Confident Writers One Month at a Time, by Sandy Woolley. For every month there are sentences for each day that are related to history or culture. They are rather like trivia facts. The sentences are written correctly. The teacher is supposed to rewrite them with mistakes that the student should be able to correct. The mistakes can be geared to review what has been taught before and what has just been taught. The sentence of the day section for each month is in two parts: one for primaries, and one for upper grades. The rest of each month's lessons are adjustable to any grade from 2-6. 15.26-D
One specific writing skill is taught each month. Topics through the year include poetry writing, organized paragraphs, research reports, fiction writing, point of view, fairy tales, borrowing a plot, autobiographical incidents, personal interviews, and using newspapers. Students are also encouraged to write journals. For each month there are enough journal topics for two or more journal entries per week.
Each month's material has two other components. Since vocabulary is an important part of writing, there are lessons on dictionary use and/or root words each month. The author also believes it is valuable to memorize poetry, partly because of the foundation in literature it provides. Memorizing poems helps familiarize students with the work of different poets and the various styles of poetry. The author also believes that reciting a poem in front of a group can give a student important practice in speaking publicly. A poem is easier to remember when one is nervous than an original speech. It is hoped this familiarity will help students write their own poems, and there are suggestions each month to encourage young poets to get started.
One of the most valuable features of this book for the one who is teaching writing is a section on grade level expectations in the introduction. For each grade there is a list of what usage skills a student should have mastered by the end of the grade. This gives the teacher a good idea of what to stress at each level if there is no other textbook or curriculum guidance.
I like this curriculum because it gives a child a chance to sample the various types of writing in a consistent way. Your child might discover that he enjoys writing a story or poem, and you may discover that she has a flair for it. But certain elements, such as journal writing and the language exposure in the poetry selections, are present every week or month. The book is directed toward the teacher, but pages are reproducible so that you can copy anything you wish to give to your children. The price for this curriculum, which can be used for several children at different grade levels together, is just $15.26-D. BTH-1705
