Drumming to the Beat of a Different Drummer: Finding the Rhythm for Teaching in a Differentiated Classroom by Debbie Silver. Incentive Publications. How I wished I'd had this book to refer to when I started teaching! There is so much practical advice here that I never got in my education courses!. The author begins with her suggestions for classroom management and getting parents involved. She then moves on to lesson planning that takes the needs of individual students into consideration with her discussion of the learning cycle, multiple intelligences, and different learning styles. She also discusses cooperative learning and using technology. Lastly, she inspires teachers to build a caring community in their classrooms by understanding emotional intelligence and helping students to become emotionally intelligent.

What I like best about this book is that it's so easy to read and apply. It makes theories understandable . It has helpful forms for organizing and managing a classroom and student assessment. It speaks the language of real teachers who are in real classrooms with real students every teacher will recognize. And it helps teachers learn how to help these students learn reach their potentials. At the end of each chapter there is a recommended reading list for more ideas.

The author of this book has 30 years experience in the classroom, mostly as a middle school science teacher, though she has taught most other grades as well. Her original poetry, anecdotes, inspirational stories, and humor will keep you reading and learning to solve your classroom problems and promote real learning. 223 pages, including bibliography. BTH-490. $17.95-D

If You Don't Feed the Teachers They Eat the Students: Guide to Success for Administrators and Teachers by Neila A. Connors. Incentive Publications, 2000. ISBN: 086530-4572. The premise of this book is that great leadership (administration) paves the way for and inspires good teaching. Teachers are "hungry" for good leadership and administrators need to "feed" them. The author discusses some of the ways to provide good leadership, meet the needs of teachers and give them what they need to become outstanding. Suggestions are very specific on such topics as showing appreciation, solving problems, and creating great schools. This is not a book of theory. It is not based on research. It came from the experiences of an educator who has worked numerous teachers and administrators. She is very familiar with the hunger of teachers and the ability of administrators to feed them. Every administrator should read this motivational and practical book.  143 pages. BTH-417. $14.36-D

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
