ViewSat.jpg (28442 bytes) View from Saturday by E. L. Konigsburg. Hardcover with jacket. Atheneum Books, 1996. Remainder mark on bottom edge. This Newbery Medal winner  focuses on the search for identity in changing situations. The four children who are the main characters are all in the same sixth grade class and also are related to each other outside of school. Each section of the book is written from the point of view of a different child. Like a thread weaving through the book are small narrated sections which explore the feelings of Mrs. Olinsky, their teacher, who is herself in a wheelchair and trying to come to grips with her disability. The four students, Noah, Nadia, Ethan, and Julian had gradually through various means become "The Souls" and all were eventually chosen by Mrs. Olinsky to be on the Academic Bowl team for her class. The author switches from one child's story to a scene at the Academic Bowl competition, then back to the next child's story, and so on, and in the process the reader begins to know "The Souls" quite intimately, even as the plot moves into intra and inter-school academic competition. By the end The Souls and Mrs. Olinsky have helped each other grow as people. And they haver also won the academic state middle school championship. This is a book for thoughtful children, not those who crave lots of action and adventure to hold their interest. The adventure is in the inward journeys of the characters. But children who are interested in people will find all the plot they need, along with humor and suspense, and they will make the acquaintance of some delightful new friends from varied cultural backgrounds.  Cat. #0689-80993X. Hattie and Sturges Turner buy it and turn it into the People's Pharmacy, complete with soda fountain. In 1920, the store is sold to a father and son, Ben and Joseph Katz, who use half of it as The Katz Soda Shop and the rest as B. Katz and Son Groceries. HuntGrdT.jpg (6527 bytes) Hunting Grandma's Treasures, by Gina Willner-Pardo. Illustrated by Walter Krudop. Clarion Books, hardcover. After Kevin's grandma dies, his extended family still has their annual vacation at Wrigley Lake. But this year everyone is sad. They miss Grandma. The seven cousins try to do everything they have done in past years when Grandma was with them - hunt crawdads,
hike to the falls, fish, and, best of all, go treasure hunting. Grandma left an envelope containing the clues with Kevin when they said their last good-bye. Grandma had been sick for a while, and everyone knew she probably wouldn't be around by summer. In the past each child had found a special present from Grandma at the end of the hunt. No one knows what to expect this year, but discover that the treasure is a grove of seven tiny trees -- one for each of them. Grandma had loved trees. This is a heartwarming story of a family dealing with grief and loss, and I highly recommend it. The paintings are somewhat impressionistic, but that fits the mood of sadness in the story.
