EXPLODE THE CODE and Its Primers
Get Ready, Get Set, Go for the Code -- The
Primers for the Explode the Code Series
Book A, Get Ready for The Code,
teaches consonants b, f, m, k, r, and t. Get Ready for The Code,
Get Set for The Code, and Go for The Code,
which all introduce the consonant letters, comprise a three-book series of primers for the
Explode The Code series. The exercises are designed to develop visual, auditory, and
kinesthetic perception of the letters. Activities include tasks such as visual tracking,
matching, tracing, copying, and identifying the letters and their sounds. Special emphasis
is given to discriminating between similar objects and letters, to developing the motor
control necessary to write legibly, and to developing the listening skills children need
to follow directions carefully. By the time children finish the series they will have
learned all of the lowercase consonant letters as well as their sounds and written forms,
and will be ready for Book 1 of the Explode The Code
series.
Explode The Code helps children learn to read by
teaching them to use the sounds of letters. In a carefully sequenced program, a variety of
exercises provides experience recognizing and combining sounds in order to read words,
phrases, sentences, and stories, as well as to build vocabulary. Exercises contain
practicing reading, writing, matching, spelling, and copying; simple directions and
consistent formats so students can work independently; amusing illustrations, drawn by
children; and cumulative review.
Tasks in the lessons of Books 1-6 include matching words to sharpen
visual discrimination; matching words and sentences with appropriate pictures to
strengthen reading comprehension; selecting, then copying, words from picture clues;
sequencing letter sounds and reinforcing them kinesthetically by writing the whole word;
reading for sentence comprehension; and spelling from memory for cumulative vocabulary.
A set of 54 illustrated cards to practice the sounds taught in Books
1-3 is also available.
The more advanced tasks in Books 7 and 8 include reading a story and
then answering comprehension questions, making words by joining syllables, and building
and strengthening vocabulary through crossword puzzles.

Beyond the CODE: Comprehension and
Reasoning Skills
Designed to develop important comprehension and thinking
skills at the earliest level, these books contain stories with exercises that follow the
same phonetic structure as the first four books in the Explode the Code Series.
All four books in the series teach concepts such as consonant blends and digraphs. All the
books have writing and spelling exercises before the stories that teach the new phonetic
patterns and sight words. There are drawings beside many new words to help students
understand the vocabulary. The short, fictional stories develop reading skills. the
stories become a bit longer as the series progresses. Lively black and white drawings add
humor and interest as they help students understand the text. After the stories
there are questions and exercises to develop comprehension and critical thinking. These
can be used alone or in conjunction with Explode the Code.

unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or
"Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam
messages look like that.
