George Washington Coloring Book by Peter F. Copeland. Dover, 2003. Contains over 40 dramatic scenes from Washington's life: his birthplace, as a young surveyor, his marriage to Martha Custis, appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, victory at Yorktown, and inauguration as the first U.S. President, etc. 48 pages. BTH-3499. $3.59-D

George Washington's Breakfast, by Jean Fritz. A young boy named after George Washington wants to know all about him. He already has a lot of important information, but he wants to know what George Washington ate for breakfast, and no one seems to know. His grandmother promised to cook it for him if he can find out.  George begins to research the subject through books, a visit to Mount Vernon.  He finally stumbles on the answer in an old book in his attic. This book provides a great role model for young researchers.  For ages 8-11, paper. $5.39-D

Washington's World, by Geneive Foster, with some added information in this expanded edition by her daughter Joanna. Just brought back into print by Beautiful Feet Books, this comprehensive biography covers the important events all over the world from George Washington's birth until his death. This is a wonderful book to read aloud to the whole family. A fourth grader can handle the reading, but it's a shame to limit the book to just one family member at a time. This book is INTERESTING. The author considered history a drama, and she portrayed it dramatically.

Mrs. Foster enhances her story with wonderful charts that introduce each time period. These contain drawings of important people and events during that period from all over the world. These will give you great ideas for who and what to put on an illustrated time line. They also help you see the whole picture, and provide a reference point when you need to get the people you're reading about back into perspective. Mrs. Foster also provides maps to help readers follow the events in the book.

Besides the biography itself, the 357 pages in this softcover book contain an index, some biographical information on how the book came to be written, and a list of other books about this period of history. The price is 15.95*.

George Washington, by Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire. This has also been brought back into print by Beautiful Feet, and is the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book I have seen for primary children on George Washington. 60 pages. $13.95*

Meet George Washington, by Joan Heilroner. A Random House Step Up Paperback Book. Primary reading level. Lively illustrations and intriguing facts, and very readable print with lots of white space make this just right for readers who are reaching the chapter book level. 72 pages. 3.99.

RulesCiv.gif (4893 bytes)Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts That Guided Our First President in War and Peace by Richard Brookhiser. These precepts are the very ones that George Washington copied out by hand in his own notebook. They were copied from a text used by generations of Jesuit tutors, and were considered the framework of civil behavior for any young man who would ever amount to anything in society. Brookhiser's introduction demonstrates how the simple notions of courtesy, respect, honesty, and humility are more likely to produce worldly success than the selfish Machiavellian traits practiced by today's politicians. George Washington believed material success without honor was worthless.

This is a hardcover edition, with a dust jacket. It is enhanced with black/white art reproductions related to George Washington. The rules are interspersed with Brookhiser's enlightening commentary, adding additional insight. Though a few of these precepts may seem a bit outdated, most are as important today as they were in Washington's time. Here's an example: "89 Speak not evil of the absent for it is unjust."

A perfect copy of this book is $14.40-D
A remaindered copy of this book, with a black marker line on the bottom edge, is only $6.93-B
Both are currently available, but stock is limited.

************************************************************************************************

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
