Some Smug Slug, by Pamela Edwards. This paperback book is my favorite of the new season's picture books. Young children will enjoy the alliterative "S" sounds in this book as it is read to them, and everyone will enjoy the great illustrations of animals and creepie crawlies by Henry Cole. The slug, who is full of personality, is determined to climb a slippery slope. He surmounts each obstacle to finally reach the top, while other creatures look on with sympathy or amusement or even sarcasm, because they already know what the reader doesn't discover until the end. (By the way, if you become fond of the slug, you won't like the ending.) BTH-2615. $5.36-D

Over the Steamy Swamp, by
Paul Geraghty. Besides showing the food chain in action, this book will make both parents and children laugh with its humorous illustrations of the animals as they discover who has been lurking behind them, ready to eat them, even as they have been drooling over their own anticipated lunch. Not to worry, though. No one gets eaten in the end, but the lion gets a very sore nose and the hungry mosquito who starts everything in motion is finally satisfied. Our discounted price is BTH-2614. $6.30-D.

OVER 8.00

CwbyAlph.jpg (24936 bytes)Cowboy Alphabet, written and illustrated by James Rice. This is a picture book for kids from 8-80, especially if they are interested in cowboys, ranching, and other western lore. Rice's pictures alone are worth the price of the book, and I believe they are geared more toward old cow-hands than young, since the young may miss some of the subtleties. "D is for dogie, them four-legged bellowing hunks of stubbornness that always seem to want to go the other direction from where it is you're trying to drive 'em. ...S is for shoes, for horses, not men. Boots is for men." The text is there to justify the marvelous pictures. Don't let any "cowpoke" miss this book. Hardcover with jacket. Cat. #Pel-7268. $12.99-D.

Songs of the Wild West, by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The commentary is by Alan Axelrod, and the arrangements are by Dan Fox. This gorgeous book for all ages to enjoy marries popular songs of the west to full-color art reproductions from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The songs have simple piano arrangements with guitar chords above, and there is historical background information for both the songs and the paintings. This book is a marvelous gift for anyone interested in history of The West. List price is 19.99. Our special  Sale Price is 16.99-S for the one left I have shrink-wrapped, and 15.00-S for the display, which has a tiny tear in the bottom front corner of the jacket.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: Words by Selina Hastings, illustrations by Juan Wijngaard. This Arthurian picture book can be read by juniors, but will be fully understood only by older children and adults. When Sir Gawain's courage and chivalry are challenged by the Green Knight, a giant adversary with super-human powers, he is often tempted to break his knightly code of honor -- especially by his host's lovely wife, who has been left to entertain him while his host , Sir Bercilak, goes hunting each day. But in the end, Sir Gawain loses only a little blood instead of his head, as he feared, and discovers the whole battle was set up to test his honor -- a test he only partially passed. Sir Bercilak, it turns out, is in the power of Morgan the Fay, whose witchcraft turns him into the Green knight for such tests as Sir Gawain has been through. This beautifully illustrated hardcover book is usually 16.00, but now is only $12.00-S.

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
