Our Country Thematic Unit by Cynthia Holzschuher. Teacher Created Materials, © 2002. 80 pages. This is a literature-based cross-curricular thematic unit that covers Uncle Sam, the American flag, patriotic symbols, presidents, and more. It is designed for grades 3-5. Books studied include So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George; Eyewitness: Presidents by James Barber; Uncle Sam and Old Glory by Delno C. West and Jean M. West; and A is for America by Devin Scillan. Some of the activities include writing, drawing, thinking about how a family of four might pack for a voyage on the Mayflower, making frybread and adjusting the recipe for different size groups, finding averages for the age of presidents when inaugurated, their average number of children, etc, arranging a list of state admission days in sequential order, finding information on historic landmarks, completing a chart for the branches of government, making a time capsule, defining vocabulary and the meanings of ideas in our Nation Anthem, and many more. Our Flag by Polly Hoffman. Teacher Created Materials, © 2002. 48 pages. This book helps students in grades 2-5 learn more about the America flag and its history. It also teaches the national anthem and its history and has related activities. There are also some other flag related songs to be sung to well-known tunes. Inspire patriotism through art, crafts, cooking, and historical aids. There is a list of related literature for additional student reading. This picture book explains the significance and importance of the American flag in large print rhymes at the top of each text page, while featuring special facts and historical events related to the flag in boxes with smaller print on the bottom of the text pages. Purple Mountain Majesties: The Story of Katharine Lee Bates and "America the Beautiful" by Barbara Younger. Illustrated by Stacey Schuett. This picture book biography is just right for introducing young readers to the author of one of America's favorite patriotic songs and the times in which she lived (late 1800's). She wrote about what she saw in the summer of 1893 on a train ride from Massachusetts to Colorado, where she experienced the beauty and grandeur of our nation through the windows of the train. Her experiences in Colorado were also part of the inspiration. The art alone is worth the price of the book. Paper. For elementary age children. Read aloud to primary children. Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem illustrated by Peter Spier. Contains complete text and music for the anthem, an illustrated history of the American flag, a map of the Battle of Baltimore, and the story of how the national anthem came to be written (in much smaller print, for adults). Spier has illustrated the first, second, and fourth stanzas of the hymn in the intricate detail he is famous for. This large format trade paperback (about 9 x 12) has something for all ages. Your children can join you in singing along as Yankee Doodle makes his famous ride through the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. You'll see behind the lines in the American camp, spy on the British soldiers, and cheer for Washington as he leads his troops in battle. Contains simple music that can be played by a beginner on the piano, and in the back of the book there are some  notes on the historical background and the slang used in the song. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
