This book begins with information and activities covering presidential qualifications, terms of office, political parties, the campaign process, the electoral college, the Inauguration and the separation of powers. This is followed by a series of pages profiling each of our presidents -- on each page. The next section is full of critical and creative thinking activities. In the next section, students select a presidential candidate from among living and dead public figures who meet presidential qualifications and go through the process of "getting him elected." Hail to the Chief: The
American Presidency by Don Robb. Charlesbridge Press, 2000. Illustrated
by Alan Witschonke. 32 pages. This beautifully illustrated picture book traced
the history of the presidency for younger children, and provides a nice review
for older children. It explains what presidents do, from leading the
nation to leading their political parties. It also shows how the actions and
decisions of one president can set the stage for those who follow. The book
focuses on presidents whose decisions set precedents or made changes in the
direction of the country: (Lincoln ending slavery, F.D. Roosevelt proposing laws
to Congress to bring some relief to those hard hit by the Depression, Eisenhower
using federal troops to enforce school desegregation, Jefferson's decision to
buy land (Louisiana Purchase_ from the French, and more.
The book has facts about every president up through Bill Clinton, and a chart at the back with names, dates of terms, political party, birth and death dates, and home states. The author also discusses the political process of how presidents are elected, what happens if they die in office, and how they can be removed from office. BTH-4810. $7.19-D.
