HELP FOR SUBSTITUTE (AND REGULAR) TEACHERSClassroom Management for Substitute Teachers by S. Harold Collins, a veteran credentialed substitute teacher. In this book, Collins shares the basics of how to establish rapport while letting students know who's in charge, and how to get the support of the regular classroom teachers and staff. This book will also help the school administration give substitutes the help that they need to be effective. Gives hints on dealing with select student comments every sub hears: (e.g.: 1. Our regular teacher doesn't do it that way. 2. I don't have to listen to you. You're just a substitute. 3. Can I get a drink of water (or go to the bathroom)? It also gives advice for how to handle power struggles with students. 45 pages. $7.15-D Mastering the Art of Substitute Teaching by S. Harold Collins, a veteran credentialed substitute teacher. In this book he covers the changing role of the substitute teacher, with hints for managing classroom behaviour, taking charge in the classroom and stategies for what and how to teach. He then shares ways to introduce oneself into a new classroom and build rapport with fillers, name games, and other short activities. This is followed by a section on longer subject area presentations. 66 pages. $8.05-D Substitute Ingredients: A journey through the soup, salad, main course, and dessert of substitute and classroom teaching. By S. Harold Collins. Garlic Press. This is a humorously-written collection of activities put together by a veteran credentialed substitute teacher. In this book he is sharing what's in his 'bag of goodies" he takes to his assignments in grades three to eight. These "goodies" include a wide variety of lessons and activities which, when accompanied by simple preparation, produce valuable learning while engaging the students in activities they find enjoyable. Each lesson provides a lead-in, practical comments, a resulting activity, and usually a reproducible master sheet. Subject areas include art, math, language arts, and humor. 91 pages. $8.05-D |

We're in the Pacific Time Zone We prefer you ask your questions about products
and availability by
e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and
keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in
your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer
unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
