BOOKS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE SUMMER

Summer is a great time to explore a new hobby or interest or to start a business. Here is a sampling of books that may be of interest to your family during this time.

How to Make Super Pop-ups by Joan Irvine for ages 8 and up contains step-by-step black and white illustrations that show every step in making 31 different pop-up projects, including cards, story boxes, masks, stage props, giant pop-ups for displays and projects. Some examples: castle, awesome insect, a bird or butterfly that flies, Pinocchio with a nose that grows, a juggler, a noisy robot, and a snapping sports car. 6.95.

There’s nothing like an Usborne book to introduce a new hobby. For ages 11 and up try the following: Design and Decorate Your Room (8.95); Pottery (7.95); & Calligraphy (7.95). For ages 8-12: Making Presents (8.95); Collecting Things (5.95); & Juggling (5.95). Ages 5-8 might want to try Starting Chess (4.95) or Starting Needlecraft (4.95).

Students 9 and over who want the very best step-by-step drawing course should try one of the following at 8.95 each:

Draw Cars (covers from classic and antique to modern racing cars and pick-ups. These are the cars you want to draw.) A BEST SELLER!

Draw Ocean Animals (includes sharks and whales and much more.)

Draw Rainforest Animals

Draw Desert Animals ( from rabbits and bats to rattlesnakes and tarantulas)

Learn to Draw 3-D (a step-by-step guide to perspective drawing.

Learn to Draw Now ( teaches how to create great drawings from basic forms) 7.95

From Dover’s extensive collection of hobby and craft books, we suggest the following, best for those 9 and over: Easy-to-Make Decorative Kites (3.95); Cowboy Roping and Rope Tricks (3.95); 25 Kites That Fly (3.50); Hand Shadows and More Hand Shadows (2.50); Fun With Easy Origami (32 projects and 24 sheets of origami paper, 4.95); Easy Magic (1.00); Fun With Paper Folding and Origami (1.00); and How to Make Origami Airplanes That Really Fly (5.95).

For kids thinking of starting a business this summer, we recommend The Totally Awesome Business Book for Kids with Twenty Super Businesses You Can Start Right Now! by Adriane Berg and Arthur Berg Bochner, age 13(10.95). This is the second book Arthur has co-authored with his mother, and his personal experiences with his own business will encourage other young people ages 10-17 who want to go into business for themselves. The authors explain some general things about forms of business ownership, business purpose, location, staff, and ethics. Then they explain the fundamentals of ten basic skills that are necessary for most businesses -- such things as negotiating, telephone skills, record keeping, and marketing. Finally they describe how to start the twenty different businesses -- everything from selling lemonade and designer T-shirts to raking leaves, mowing lawns, recyling, and book bartering. There are several other ideas as well, and they are appropriate for the target age group.

The Kids Money Book (4.95), begins with general information on advertising, selling, setting prices, collecting money, and safety. The authors then describe over forty different businesses by answering the following questions for each: What do I need? How much can I earn? How much time will it take? What else do I need to Know? How do I get started? Each of these books will help young entrepreneurs get started. The first emphasizes basic skills needed in all businesses. The second is stronger in the area of ideas for specific businesses. You choose.

NEW AND FUN FOR GIRLS! Design a Paper Doll You, 6.95, from Learning Works. By using this book, photos, something to color with, and scissors, girls can design paper dolls that look like themselves and design the clothes themselves. Contains six extra dolls to make family and friends. Great for a present!

************************************************************************************************

We're in the Pacific Time Zone
Our normal office hours when we answer the phone are 10: 30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday.
We answer email and ship at other times, but normally take Sundays off.

We prefer you ask your questions about products and availability by e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually have to call you back or email you anyway.  We do check our e-mail frequently throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time zone.
When you do email us, please do not leave the subject blank or just say "Hi" or "Hello" as the subject. We delete those before opening because a lot of spam messages look like that.
We have supplied a subject line in the link provided above that will guarantee your mail will be opened fast.
Or call (800)925-8587 (not before 10 AM or after 10 PM Pacific Time)
