WORSHIP AND CHURCH LIFEParenting in the Pew: Guiding Your Children into the Joy of Worship by Robbie Castleman. Foreword by Ruth Bell Graham. The author has a passion for worship, and has learned how to teach children to praise God. She impresses upon parents the importance of taking their children's worship seriously, and proceeds to show how parents can help their children, toddlers to teenagers, to participate wholeheartedly in life's most important act. Trade paper, InterVarsity Press. 125 pages + discussion questions for group study. CAT. # IVP-16275. $8.99-D The Promise of Heaven: Discovering Our Eternal Home
by Douglas Connelly. InterVarsity Press, 2000, Hardcover with jacket. A small, attractive
book suitable to give as a gift. This thought-provoking book helps us focus on what
the Bible has revealed about Heaven and being face to face with the Lord. One of the
aspects the author focuses on is the importance of worship in Heaven and how we can be
preparing for that in our worship now. What Mr. Connelly shares will encourage and
challenge us as we seek to live faithful lives in preparation for the day we meet
Jesus and give our account of our lives to Him. As Mr. Connelly presents each
characteristic of Heaven that he finds presented in the Bible he follows it with a section
called "Living Now in the Light of Not Yet." that helps us apply the new
insights to our lives now so that we will be more prepared for Heaven when we get there. I
highly recommend this books to those who long to hear Jesus say: "Well done, thou
good and faithful servant." The Worship Maze: Finding a Style to Fit Your Church by Paul Basden. Trade paper, InterVarsity press, 1999. One problem facing many churches is how to meet the worship service expectations of members from different generations who may have different tastes in worship music and styles. Some like it dignified and traditional with organ and/or piano music to accompany the hymns from the hymnal. Others like it contemporary, with lots of praise songs and maybe even electric guitars and drums. How can a church meet the needs of all its members? This book seek to explore the answers to questions that are being raised in the worship committees of churches everywhere. Mr. Basden, a pastor and professor, believes worship should be a celebration -- not a source of conflict. In this book he leads church folk through what he terms the worship maze and reviews five prominent approaches to worship: liturgical, traditional, revivalist, praise, and seeker-sensitive. He lays out the essentials of any genuine worship, points out the strengths and weaknesses of each of the five styles, and shows how your church can arrive at the most fitting style for its own services. 149 pages followed by notes and suggested readings. We're in the Pacific Time Zone We prefer you ask your questions about products
and availability by
e-mail, since that gives us more time to prepare a thoughtful answer and
keeps us from playing phone tag. Please remember to put our email address in
your address book if you have a spam filter or you won't ever get your answer
unless you also leave a phone number. We cannot usually tell you immediately over the phone if a
book is here. We have to walk two blocks to check the warehouse, so I usually
have to call you back or email you anyway. We do check our e-mail frequently
throughout the day when we are at home. If we should be out, and you leave a
message on our answering machine, we sometimes cannot hear the phone number
clearly to return your call. Those are some reasons why we recommend you email
us first. If you want us to call you, please leave your phone number and time
zone.
