Long Spikes, by Jim Arnosky. Hardcover nature story for all ages (grade 4+ reading level). A yearling buck and his twin sister see their mother killed by hungry coyotes. Follow their lives as they learn to survive on their own and cope not only with finding food and shelter, but also with predators, winter weather, and human hunters. A realistic, powerful woodland drama presented from the animal's point of view and illustrated with Arnosky's wonderful detailed line drawings. Was 12.95. Now only 8.95-S

Maizie, by Linda Oatman High. Hardcover, published by Holiday House. Although the adults in this family are not good role models (Pa drinks too much and Ma has deserted her family and run off with another man), 12-year-old Maizie tries to care for her younger sister and apply what little of the Bible she has been taught in the church she attends with her little sister. This book deals with some tough issues, including unanswered prayer, and should definitely be read aloud and discussed rather than just being given to a child. But in certain situations it could be just the book to open the door to an important discussion. Reading level is about third grade and up. Was 14.95. Now only 10.45-S.

Poppy Seeds, by Clyde Bulla. A chapter book in which a little boy who plants some poppy seeds softens an old man's heart. First two pages are not cut down to size and have a wrinkle. When you cut them, you'll hardly notice the defect. 3.99, 1.50
